Colloquium: Design Coding

‘Design Coding’ was the third in a series of A+DS colloquia addressing key built environment issues. The event was held during Urban Design Week and was attended by an invited multi-disciplinary audience of 38 professionals. ‘Design Coding’ was chaired by A+DS Deputy Chair (and Partner in Gillespies) Professor Brian Evans.

He opened the event by acknowledging that – while A+DS actively engages with those who use design codes – the organisation has no formal position on their appropriateness as an agent for ensuring quality in the 21st century urban realm. He hoped that the colloquium would provide a suitable forum for debate in assisting A+DS define its position.

Professor Evans then welcomed the two speakers for the afternoon: Martin Crookston (Director of Llewelyn Davies Yeang); and - as a late addition to the agenda - Robert Adam (Director of Robert Adam Architects).

The report which can be downloaded opposite represents a faithful record of the proceedings of the day which will be invaluable in assisting A+DS determine its views on design coding.

A+DS found the day extremely helpful and will use the lessons and feedback in formulating its view informally and, perhaps, formally. Participants and readers are urged to read widely and comprehensively on the subject to further progress their understanding of design coding and its potential for application.
