DEFINING PLACE WORKSHOP AND EXHIBITION

This online photography exhibition is a joint venture between The Lighthouse and Architecture and Design Scotland (A+DS). It is inspired by the exhibition ‘Architecture in Scotland 2004- 2006 / Defining Place’ and by a current A+DS photographic survey.

The photographs are the results of two workshops which took place in Glasgow and Edinburgh in May 2006. The workshops were aimed at recording, through photography, different types of places in each city. Through group discussion, the participants investigated why they thought places were successful – or not.

The workshop participants represented an interesting mix of built environment professionals and those outside the profession. Each person took thirty-six photographs in total and chose four to exhibit: one from each of the following categories:-

My Place

Good Place

Bad Place

Unexpected Place

The resulting 144 images best sum up the photographers’ collective experiences of the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow and of the types of places within them. They have been exhibited at The Lighthouse from 15th June – 27th August and are now available to view online by clicking here. The images were chosen by the participants. They were not selected on artistic or technical merit but for what they say about good, bad, personal and unexpected places.

We hope you enjoy them on this basis.
