CREATING HEALING ENVIRONMENTS: HUMANISTIC ARCHITECTURE AND THERAPEUTIC
DESIGN
For the first in a regular series of colloquia, Architecture and
Design Scotland invited Rona Stephen and Richard Mazuch of Nightingale
Associates to share their ideas on ‘Creating Healing Environments:
Humanistic Architecture and Therapeutic Design’. The event took
place in Architecture and Design Scotland’s Bakehouse Close office
from 2-5pm on Monday 20th February and attracted a dynamic mix of invited
audience members from a variety of disciplines within healthcare and
the built environment.
Humanistic architecture aims to place human welfare at the heart of
building design and environmental management. Through a mixture of presentation
and experiential exercises - followed by a facilitated group discussion
of the points raised - the colloquium explored how such an approach
to architecture can create healing healthcare environments that, evidence
shows, can enhance and support the care and treatment process.
The event was chaired by A+DS Advisory Board Member and architect of
the recently completed Robin House children’s hospice, Gareth
Hoskins. A summary report is available to download as a pdf by clicking
