30% - NEW HOUSE DESIGN IN SMALL TOWNS AND RURAL AREAS

30% is a new touring exhibition. It premiered at ‘Rural Housing / Rural Development – Making Connections’, a conference held by the Rural Housing Service at The Birnam Institute on 24th February 2006. It has since traveled to the RIAS Convention in Perth (May 2006), the Scottish Parliament (June 2006) and the Scottish Storytelling Centre (June 2006).

The exhibition’s title is based on the statistic that 30% of Scotland’s population live in settlements of less than 10,000; of which 18% are in those of less than 3,000. Pressure for new development offers opportunities to achieve good quality housing, which can enhance the rural landscape and natural heritage if handled appropriately. The exhibition – which features new house designs by 15 architects throughout Scotland – aims to demonstrate how designers can meet the challenge of the rural context, responding to issues such as siting, design, form, character, materials and details.
